LWVE Newsletter– The INTERCOM

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings, League members!

As I write this letter we are less than 24 hours from the second attempt on the life of one of our presidential candidates. Schools and public buildings have been forced to shut down because of false, racist and incendiary stories posted about Springfield, Ohio. When historians look back on this election, political violence will certainly be one of the themes that will be discussed.

In the coming months the League will be hosting several events that are directly on topic.

On October 16 at noon at the Evanston Public Library, we will have a speaker on Mis- and Disinformation. Please plan to join members from the Evanston and Wilmette leagues to learn how to identify and combat misinformation. The event is free; a boxed lunch from Foodstuffs will be available for $25. Sign up here.

Just a week after the election, on November 12 at 7 p.m., we will host a Zoom lecture with good government advocate and former Cook County Clerk David Orr. He will explain the results of the election and what comes next. Please join us for a lecture entitled What Changed on November 5?  Sign up here.

Next up, and looming larger in my list of worries, is the interregnum, or the time between election and swearing in of the new administration. President Trump had a rocky exit from the White House following the 2020 election.

On Sunday, December 8, come hear Dick Simpson, professor, author, politician, activist, political consultant and filmmaker, discuss the electoral college and the certification process. Former President Donald Trump has continued to insist that he did not lose the election in 2020— stoking fear that he may again encourage his supporters to block certification of the election next January if he loses for a second time. Trump and his allies have also continued to raise unfounded alarms about voter fraud that could impact the election. The last time these things happened not only did the Capitol Building sustain damage, so did our Democracy.

This December 8 event is a fundraiser that not only supports the work of LWVE but funds our annual ETHS scholarship. Sign up here..

Stay strong and safe. Things may get rocky.
—Michelle Jordan, President, League of Women Voters of Evanston
