LWVE Hosts Springfield Legislators

by Joan M Lakebrink, published September 2024

LWVE hosted its annual Legislative Lunch in August. Read more to learn about legislative accomplishments and future priorities.

LWVE welcomed four state legislators from our area to a luncheon held at the Evanston/Northshore YWCA on August 12. Senators Laura Fine (D-IL9) and Ram Villivatam (D-IL8), and Representatives Robyn Gabel (House Majority Leader, D-IL18) and Kevin Olickal (D-IL16) seemed enthusiastic about meeting with their constituents for this regular event.

They reported that the State of Illinois is financially sound and has recovered from the fiscal crisis of recent years. Each speaker reflected a palpable spirit of optimism and they showed themselves to be hard-working and well informed. They presented summaries of wide-ranging legislative accomplishments over the year.

Several outlined aspects of the strongest environment legislation passed to date. They cited steps for carbon emissions capture, the prohibition of small plastic containers of shampoo and other amenities in hotel rooms and limits on forever chemicals in the Great Lakes.

Education was a priority. An Early Childhood Education Department was established and more resources were committed to K-12 education. Training for jobs is getting more attention and support.

Expanded access to medical care took several forms, including establishing a state market for insurance, clarifying inclusion for mental health treatment and measures to make medication more affordable. In addition, medical aid in dying is on the docket. More support is needed for reproductive care including maternity and birthing centers, and gender affirming care needs to be protected — all while efforts are being made to improve wages for caregivers.

Public transportation continues to be a challenge. Although more money has been allocated, deficits remain and sources of funding are uncertain.

Our legislators reminded us that additional areas need attention, including continued focus on prison reform, planning for a possible increase in people moving to Illinois due to climate changes elsewhere, support for the new 9-8-8 mental health help line, paid medical leave and limiting gun violence with a focus on lost/stolen firearms.
