LWVE Newsletter– The INTERCOM

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings Evanston League,

The British Diplomat Austen Chamberlain is widely credited with authoring the curse may you live in interesting times. Well, friends, we are cursed, well and good. We are heading towards some exceptionally interesting times.

If you are struggling to process the changes that will be rolling out before us, I recommend that you join with your League friends. The scope and rate of changes to our democratic norms may be unsettling, and isolation may only compound the negative impact.

On November 12, LWVE had an event with former Cook County Clerk (and briefly, Chicago Mayor) David Orr who talked about What Changed on November 5. Another expert, Professor Dick Simpson, will be featured at our December 8 event. Professor Simpson will give us his opinion about what we can expect post-election. Our event is entitled The Election has Happened, What Comes Next?

I recently attended two excellent programs put together by neighboring leagues. Last month, many Evanston members joined me in attending Abolish the Electoral College: Elect the President by Direct Popular Vote at the Glenview Public Library.

Also, in October, many LWVE members and I attended a documentary film event hosted by the Wilmette League at the Wilmette Theater about the decline in local journalism, Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink. The film was a thoughtful examination of the importance of journalism in our democracy. The panel after the documentary featured Tim Franklin, a Northwestern University journalism dean who chairs the school’s local news initiative, and Blair Kamin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic.

More recently, I spoke with Professor Dick Simpson, speaker for our December 8 event, and was surprised to hear that his presentation will not be all gloom and doom. His message will be uplifting, educational, and will focus on some specific suggestions on the role that League members will need to play in preserving our democratic norms and guardrails. Remember, this is a fundraiser that supports the vital work of the League as well as our ETHS scholarship program. Please bring friends, family and neighbors for a thoughtful discussion, a wonderful lunch and afterwards, perhaps you can get some holiday shopping done since you will already be at Old Orchard.

Stay strong.
