Many homeowners and renters are interested in solar energy, but are unable to install solar panels themselves. Community Solar provides another avenue for participating in the renewable energy movement while saving on electric bills.
Considering the recent election and anticipated shift in federal energy policy toward fossil fuels, it is crucial for us to take proactive steps to reduce our reliance on these energy sources. The urgency of this issue cannot be overstated, as the effects of climate change continue to impact our communities, ecosystems and future generations. Fortunately, even if you cannot install solar panels on your home or are a renter, there are similar and effective ways to reduce your carbon footprint.
The Illinois community solar program allows electricity customers to enjoy the benefits of solar energy without the need to install solar panels on their property. By joining a community provider, your electricity usage will be assessed to determine how many solar panels you can claim from a solar farm to meet your energy needs. This program is a game-changer for those who may not have the means or ability to install solar panels on their roofs but still want to contribute to a more sustainable future.
Here’s how it works: If your household consumes 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity in a month, and your share of the solar installation produces 950 kWh during that same period, you would receive a credit on your electric bill for the full 950 kWh supplied to you. Consequently, you would only pay the utility company for the remaining 50 kWh. Additionally, you would receive a separate bill detailing the 950 kWh from your community solar subscription. Currently, all community solar providers offer rates lower than those of utility companies, with savings typically ranging from 10 percent to 15 percent.
In Evanston, we are fortunate to have multiple Community solar provider options that make this transition even easier. The Citizens Utility Board provides information on Illinois options on their website. The City of Evanston also provides information and links on their community solar page.
Before signing up with any community solar provider, it is important to do research and consider asking the following questions:
- What is the term of the contract, if any? Understanding the duration will help you plan for your energy needs.
- Are there fees for early contract termination? Knowing this can save you from unexpected costs if your circumstances change.
- What is the cost of the electricity you will be paying for? Ensure that the rates are competitive and provide the savings you expect.
- How much will you save?
The benefits of subscribing to community solar extend beyond just financial savings. Not only can it lower your overall electricity costs, it also supports renewable energy development in Illinois. By investing in community solar, you are actively participating in a larger movement toward sustainability.
