LWVE Assists with Fair and Secure Elections

by Mary Keefe Kelly, published November 2024

LWVE members contributed to voter registration and education, election monitoring and more during this fall’s election season.

We owe a huge thanks to the people who made our elections run so smoothly and fairly: the poll workers, election officials and their staff, election observers, postal workers and volunteers. Thank you!

Anyone interested in voter services volunteer activities should contact Mary K. Kelly.

On behalf of the LWVE voter services leadership team—Judy Hoffman, Jennifer O’Neil, Gail Weisberg and me—we want to thank each and every participant in our voter services campaigns this season. Accomplishments this summer and fall are many:
• Staffed voter registration tables at:
1. Evanston Race Against Hate
2. Connections for the Homeless Block Party
3. Connections- four drop-in centers
4. YMCA
5. Local libraries in Evanston, Skokie and Morton Grove
6. Trulee Evanston
7. Ann Rainey Apartments
8. Westminster Place
9. Reproduction Coalition Rally
AND we had four tables on National Voter Registration Day.

These registration teams registered about 65 voters and had interactions, mainly voting questions, with 150+ voters in the Evanston and Skokie communities;
• Staffed and co-hosted a number of candidate forums;
• Conducted a deputy registrar training class led by the Cook County Clerk’s office;
• Staffed tables (or co-sponsored events) with the ACLU and the Evanston History Center (Catherine McCullough Film);
• Operated a Voter Hotline telephone service;
• Participated in several events at ETHS;
• Informed VPAC (Voter Participation Action Coalition) of key dates and events;
• Distributed 1,000 LWVE voter information bookmarks;
• Had representatives of the LWVE 2024 Poll Watcher Project on election day at every polling place in Evanston; and,
• Assisted the Evanston city clerk with staffing on election day, resulting in 160+ voter interactions.

Assisting the leadership team in these many accomplishments were members of our team of deputy registrars as well as members of our League with special interests in the voter services arena:

Focus on Poll Watching
Gail Weisberg, coordinator for the 2024 Poll Watcher Project, submitted the following report:

We at the LWVE understand the importance of poll watchers and wanted to have representatives from our local league in all Evanston precincts. At our voter services team meeting in August, Gail Weisberg outlined the project. Eight members signed up: Marcia Bogolub, Suzanne Calder, Sharon Goodman, Rita Kashner, Joan Linsenmeier, Katie O’Neil, Mary Rothschild and Gail Weisberg.

Gail produced several documents and a survey for the poll watchers to fill out for each precinct they visited. She led two training sessions — one in person and one online. She also worked with the Cook County Clerk’s office so that anyone who wanted could attend Election Judge training. Two members attended the training.

Surveys were submitted to Gail, who will produce a report on LWVE’s observations and any suggestions we have for the future.
