LWV’s New National Membership Platform

by Mary Keefe Kelly and Mary Lewis, published February 2025

The LWV is transitioning to a new membership structure. A key aim is to get more people involved in empowering voters and defending democracy.

It’s been a long time coming. The LWV’s Transformation Task Force started back in 2017, creating a framework for the future of the League. Almost eight years later, we are dotting the last i's and crossing the last t's to put this ambitious new plan into action. What was a far-off target date is happening in February of 2025. One key component: LWV members from across the country will pay dues directly to LWVUS, and the national organization will then send funds to state and local chapters.

Do not worry about what you need to do right now! You are all paid up through June 30, 2025. However, you could access the new “National Membership Portal” and check your profile for accuracy. You can do this by clicking on the email you will get from the “LWV Membership team.” You will get a renewal of dues letter before June 30, 2025– and they will have all the bugs fixed by then.

You should have already received (by USPS) an abbreviated explanation of the New National Membership Platform. Additionally, we invite you to read a fuller Guide to the changes for LWVE members, available under the Membership tab on our website.

Change can be as challenging as it is exciting. If you need a refresher, some support or just a person to consult, you have options:

  • Tools for the Transformation are available on the LWVUS website, including recordings of the different training sessions, which can all be found at lwv.org/transformation.
  • LWVUS offers monthly help sessions. Please consider attending office hours on the third Wednesday of each month at 4pm EST.

The LWVUS team has been hard at work identifying a system that meets the requirements of a new membership platform as identified by stakeholders, including state and local League leaders. We applaud them for all their efforts at helping make the LWV a model for our mission to protect the democracy that we all have come to know and love.
