The League of Women Voters of Cook County held its annual meeting on May 6, 2025 at the Brookfield Zoo. Although the Zoo is a long drive from Evanston, a strong contingent of LWVE members attended the meeting and were energized by the discussion of LWVCC activities over the past year. The Voter Services Committee and the Observer Corps continue their important work, and three strong Interest Groups– Budget and Structure, Criminal Justice, and Forest Preserve District– pay close attention to these areas of Cook County government and regularly convey LWVCC concerns to Commissioners and elected officials.

LWVCC business was smoothly conducted. New officers were elected, headed by the election of long-time Board member Diane Edmundson as President. The proposed budget and program were approved, and the work of retiring two-term President Cynthia Schilsky was celebrated.

The highlight of the meeting was a presentation by Brookfield Zoo President and CEO Dr. Mike Adkesson. He outlined the strong history of the Zoo as well as plans for new projects illustrating the range of natural environments for the animals. He pointed out that the Brookfield Zoo is a leader in scientific research as well at a site for family and resident engagement and enjoyment. He also thanked the LWVCC for supporting the successful Forest Preserve Referendum in 2022 which provides additional funds for infrastructure updates and research projects.

The next LWVCC event will be the annual Food for Thought luncheon scheduled for Friday, August 8 from 11:30 to 1:00. It will be held on DePaul University’s Chicago Loop campus, in the DePaul Club Room on the 11th Floor at 1 East Jackson Blvd. Dr. Kiran Joshi, Chief Operating Officer of the Cook County Department of Public Health, will outline the work of the county public health department, the importance of their work, and the potential impact of proposed Federal funding reductions. The cost is $40 and reservations can be made through the LWVCC website.
