LWVE members had a chance to mingle and chat with key Evanston City staff members at a Drinks & Dialogue on November 13 at Ten Mile House on Central Street. Our informal conversations allowed League members to ask staff about their work and offer comments on a wide range of issues. At midpoint in the event, staff members introduced themselves and spoke briefly about their history working with Evanston and their current focus.
City staff present at the event were:

• Police Chief Schenita Stewart
• Fire Chief Paul Polep
• Parks and Recreation Director Audrey Thompson
• City Engineer Lara Biggs
• Community Development Director Sarah Flax
It was striking to hear how long many of the speakers have worked for the City: 10, 12, 19, or, in the case of Chief Polep, 29 years. Chief Stewart is the newcomer to the City staff, having been in the position for only three years. But her Evanston roots are deep and her family has lived in Evanston for at least four generations.
One overall impression of the discussion was that these City staff are enthusiastic, energetic, and comfortable interacting with the public. They expressed appreciation for their colleagues and for the collaborative atmosphere within City government. Because many of them have risen through the ranks and held different positions, they know their colleagues and understand the way different units can assist one another. They acknowledged that Evanstonians can be resistant to change, but are also always looking for ways to make the City better.
Engaging and serving the community were cited as priorities throughout the comments. Thanks to our guests for spending time with us at the end of the workday, and thanks to the LWVE Events Committee for arranging this opportunity for engagement.
