Reject Presidential Attacks on Nonprofit Organizations!

April 17, 2025– Last week, President Trump called to revoke Harvard University’s 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

This move isn’t about security—it’s about punishing organizations that don't align with the Trump administration’s ideology. Unilateral attempts to strip a nonprofit of its status without due process is not only harmful, it's likely illegal.  Any such action is a blatant example of egregious overreach and a direct threat to the rule of law.

If this attempt succeeds, it will set a precedent that can applied to any nonprofit organization. The real-world impact in Illinois could be severe: organizations could be forced to eliminate critical services or cease operations completely.

This is an attack on the entire nonprofit sector and the people who work everyday to serve our communities.

Michelle Jordan, President of the LWVE, has signed on to an Open Letter Rejecting Presidential Attacks on Nonprofit Organizations.

TAKE ACTION! Call your elected officials using this script and instructions.
Please make these calls as soon as possible; our partners at Voices for National Service have created this action with the goal of flooding offices with calls in support of AmeriCorps in the next few days—time is of the essence.

After you’ve called your representatives, please take one more minute to send a letter to your lawmakers using [this form].

Protect Our Voting Rights– SAVE Act is voter suppression!

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act would require Americans to provide citizenship documentation every time they register to vote.

April 10, 2025– The bill received unanimous support from House Republicans along with four Democrats, and now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to come up for a vote very soon.

LWVUS issued this statement strongly opposing this legislation and calling on the Senate to protect American voters by rejecting this bill.

SPREAD THE WORD! Protect voting rights! Everyone in the country can easily take action with the League.

Electoral College Abolition–
LWV Position

The League believes that the direct-popular-vote method for electing the President and Vice President is essential to representative government. We believe, therefore, that the Electoral College should be abolished.

We support the use of the National Popular Vote Compact as one acceptable way to achieve the goal of the direct popular vote for election of the president until the abolition of the Electoral College is accomplished.
