On Monday, March 10 at the Pit and Tap in Wilmette, the LWVE trivia team, the Evanston Catts, competed in a Women's History Month trivia contest. The team named themselves after Carrie Chapman Catt, a leader in the women’s suffrage movement and founder of the League of Women Voters, and also in a nod to the NU Wildcats and the Evanston Township High School Wildkits. Evanstonians Rachel Ruttenberg and Kathy Hayes also attended the event and played on a team of members from different area Leagues.
Surprisingly, one answer that kept the Evanston Catts in the running involved a quotation used on LWV merchandise: "Democracy is not a spectator sport." This quotation has been attributed to Lotte E. Scharfman, a refugee who escaped with her family from Austria.
Our thanks to the League of Women Voters of Wilmette for organizing this fun and educational event.
