At the ETHS Senior Awards Ceremony on May 7, 2025, Marin Ubersox received the LWVE’s 2025 scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who has demonstrated commitment to an activity that promotes participation in the political process in the school and/or the Evanston community. Consistent with the League’s mission, the scholarship further recognizes a student who exemplifies a high standard of good citizenship and social involvement through participation in activities such as student government and voter registration, thereby showing interest and engagement in public service and the political process.
While in high school, Ms. Ubersox was active in the Politics Club. She and her co-leader regularly made slideshows about recent political events, providing background information and questions to lead discussions. The club also organized student field trips, such as to Kent College of Law to participate in constitutional democracy forums and to local courts to observe the proceedings. Locally, they invited Mayor Biss to ETHS for a talk and question-and-answer forum. Additionally, Ms. Ubersox got involved in Participatory Budgeting in Evanston, and with the school’s Community Service Club, she wrote postcards to get out the vote.
While engaged in her various civic activities, Ms. Ubersox was on the honor roll all four years. She was recognized as a “highest distinction” graduate. She is an Illinois State Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society, and received commendation towards biliteracy in English and Spanish. She plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin where she was admitted to the School of Civic Leadership. She will pursue a double major in political science and international studies with a minor in Spanish.
The LWVE is committed to providing one $1500 scholarship to a graduating ETHS Senior each year for several more years. Contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome.
