After a brief respite following a busy election season, the Voter Services crew is back to work on a variety of projects.
Race Against Hate, June 15
The Race Against Hate is an annual Evanston social justice run/walk event honoring the legacy of Ricky Byrdsong, former Northwestern University Basketball Coach and Skokie resident, who was murdered by a white supremacist in 1999 while walking in his neighborhood with two of his young children. This year’s Race Against Hate was held on June 15, and once again, the LWVE was present, providing voting information and encouraging participation in the next election. Special thanks to Gail Weisberg and Mary Kelly, LWVE deputy registrars who staffed the event, starting with a 6:30 a.m. setup. That’s dedication!
Connections Block Party, July 26
Connections for the Homeless is an Evanston-based nonprofit providing support to people who are experiencing housing insecurity. They will be hosting their 4th annual Block Party on Saturday, July 26, starting at noon in Twiggs Park. LWVE volunteers will staff a voter registration/information table from 12-4 p.m. The Block Party is family friendly and will have games, food, and music. More information is at
connect2home.org/blockparty.
Upcoming Voter Services Meeting
There will be a Voter Services meeting in late September (date TBD); both longtime and newer LWVE members are welcome. We will discuss volunteer opportunities such as becoming a deputy registrar; assisting with the new voter information database, VOTE411; and helping with candidate forums for the 2026 Primary Election. Look for meeting information in an email update from the LWVE. For more information, contact Judy Hoffman,
